Where to Stay in Westminster, Victoria and Pimlico: From Whitehall's Grand Hotels to the Belgrave Road B&Bs

Hotels in Westminster, St James's, Victoria and Pimlico compared: the grand hotels on Whitehall, the practical base for Gatwick and the coach station, and the Pimlico B&Bs, several with no lift.

In this guide

Four districts share the SW1 postcode here, and each suits a different trip. Westminster and Whitehall put the Abbey, Parliament and the Churchill War Rooms on the doorstep. St James’s, south of Piccadilly, has the old-fashioned five-star hotels. Victoria is the railway and coach terminus. Pimlico, south of Victoria, is where the small, cheaper hotels are.

What they share is quiet evenings. Whitehall and the streets around St James’s Park are government offices and empty after work and at weekends, which helps you sleep and doesn’t help you find dinner.

💡 The Short Version: For Gatwick or the coach station, sleep at Victoria: The Clermontad is next to the station, and the Lime Tree Hotelad is a minute from the coach station. The cheapest beds are in Pimlico: Astor Victoriaad dorms from £18, and The Georgian Housead at about £140, with no lift. For the sights on foot, St Ermin’sad at about £220 is 100 metres from St James’s Park station. At the top, The Goringad (about £600) is the family-owned one by Buckingham Palace, Corinthiaad (about £750) has a swimming pool in its spa, and Raffles at The OWOad (about £900) is the Old War Office.

Which part of Westminster

Victoria is the station and the streets around it. Southern and Gatwick Express trains from Gatwick end here, Victoria Coach Station is a separate building about five minutes’ walk down Buckingham Palace Road, and Buckingham Palace is about ten minutes’ walk north. Most of the practical, mid-priced hotels are here.

Pimlico is the grid of white stucco terraces south of the station. Belgrave Road, Warwick Way and St George’s Drive are lined with small hotels in converted houses, and Pimlico station on the Victoria line is one stop from Victoria. Tate Britain and the Thames are at the bottom of it.

Westminster and St James’s Park is the government quarter between Victoria Street and the park: Westminster Abbey, Parliament Square and St James’s Park station. Buckingham Gate and Caxton Street are a few minutes from all of them.

Whitehall and Trafalgar Square is the northern end: Downing Street, Horse Guards and the Churchill War Rooms, with Charing Cross and Embankment stations and the National Gallery. Covent Garden and Soho are a short walk north.

St James’s is the grid between Pall Mall and Piccadilly, with Green Park station on its western edge. North of Piccadilly is Mayfair: The Ritz and the grand hotels there are in our Mayfair stay guide. The County Hall hotels facing Big Ben across Westminster Bridge are in our South Bank stay guide.

Our Westminster area guide covers what to see, and the Westminster walk links the sights in eleven stops from Westminster Bridge to Trafalgar Square.

Common questions

Is Westminster a good area to stay in London?

For sightseeing, yes. From St James's Park or Whitehall you can walk to Westminster Abbey, the Houses of Parliament, Buckingham Palace, the Churchill War Rooms and Trafalgar Square without a Tube. The catch is the evenings: Whitehall and the streets around the Abbey are government offices and go quiet after work and at weekends, so for restaurants and bars you walk north of Trafalgar Square into Soho or Covent Garden.

What is the cheapest place to stay near Victoria station?

Astor Victoria on Belgrave Road, with dorm beds from £18 and twin rooms from £99, though its dorms take only 18- to 39-year-olds. For a private room, The Z Hotel Victoria was £135 to £205 across five nights we priced, with a windowless Inside Double of 9 square metres as its cheapest room. The Georgian House Hotel in Pimlico is about £140.

Where should I stay for Gatwick or a coach from Victoria?

Southern and Gatwick Express trains from Gatwick end at Victoria, so anywhere within five minutes of the station works: The Clermont is next to the station, and The Z Hotel Victoria, The July and The Rubens at the Palace are a short walk. For National Express and Megabus, the Lime Tree Hotel on Ebury Street is a minute from Victoria Coach Station.

Is Westminster quiet at night?

Very. Whitehall, Victoria Street and the streets around St James's Park are offices and government buildings, and they empty after working hours and at weekends. Pimlico is residential and quiet too. If you want pubs and restaurants on the doorstep, Covent Garden and Soho are a short walk north of Trafalgar Square.

Is Pimlico a good place to stay?

It is the cheapest part of this area for a private room, and Pimlico station on the Victoria line is one stop from Victoria and three from Oxford Circus. Belgrave Road, Warwick Way and St George's Drive are lined with small hotels in converted 19th-century houses. Many have no lift, so ask before you book if stairs are a problem: Luna Simone and The Georgian House have none, the Windermere has one.
