In this guide
Paddington is a railway station with a hotel district wrapped around it. The Heathrow Express and the Elizabeth line leave from here, Great Western Railway runs west to Bath and Oxford, and five Tube lines stop underneath. The hotels fill the streets in every direction: a Victorian railway hotel on the front of the station, chain hotels on the canal basin behind it, and a grid of converted stucco townhouses on Norfolk Square and Sussex Gardens.
What decides where you sleep is how early your train is, whether you can manage stairs, and how late you plan to be out.
💡 The Short Version: For an early flight, Hilton London Paddingtonad, about £200, is the 1854 Great Western Royal Hotel on the front of the station, and The Pilgrmad, about £150, is under three minutes’ walk; the first Heathrow Express leaves at 04:34 Monday to Saturday. On a budget, Norfolk Towers sells 4.5-square-metre singles from £69. With children, Mitre House Hotel has family rooms for four, a cooked breakfast included and a lift. For a kitchen, Wilde has studios on the canal basin. And plan the late nights: Paddington has no Night Tube line.
Which part of Paddington
The station edge: Praed Street, London Street and Eastbourne Terrace. The hotels here are one to five minutes from the platforms. Praed Street is the busy one, with St Mary’s Hospital, shops and traffic; London Street runs from the station front to Norfolk Square. Eastbourne Terrace lines the west side of the station.
Paddington Basin and Paddington Central, behind the station, are modern office quarters on the canal. North Wharf Road and Merchant Square are on the basin; Kingdom Street is across the tracks at Paddington Central. They are quiet at night and emptier at weekends, when the offices close.
Norfolk Square and Sussex Gardens is the townhouse grid between the station and Hyde Park. Norfolk Square is a garden square lined with small hotels. Sussex Gardens is a long, wide road of converted terraces running from Edgware Road towards Lancaster Gate. This is where the family-run hotels are, and where you check for a lift.
Westbourne Terrace runs south-west from the station towards Lancaster Gate, and Edgware Road, a few minutes east, is a main road with two Tube stations.
Little Venice, where the Grand Union meets the Regent’s Canal, is about ten minutes’ walk north of the station, or one stop on the Bakerloo line to Warwick Avenue. Our Paddington area guide covers the canal, the waterbus to Camden and where to eat, and our canal walks guide maps the towpath.
Bayswater, Queensway and Lancaster Gate have their own guide: where to stay in Notting Hill and Bayswater. East of Edgware Road, Marble Arch and Portman Square are in where to stay in Marylebone.

Common questions
Is Paddington a good area to stay in London?
It is the best-connected base for Heathrow and the west of England. The Heathrow Express reaches Terminals 2 and 3 in 15 minutes, the Elizabeth line runs to Heathrow in about 27 and on through the West End to the City, and Great Western Railway runs direct to Bath and Oxford. Five Tube lines stop at the station. What it lacks is a Night Tube line, so a very late night out ends with a night bus or a walk to Lancaster Gate.
What is the cheapest place to stay in Paddington?
Norfolk Towers on Norfolk Place sells Small Single rooms of about 4.5 square metres from £69 including VAT, with an en-suite shower. St David's Hotels on Norfolk Square has singles that share a bathroom with two other rooms, and Barry House on Sussex Place sells room-only budget rooms on its fourth floor. St David's and Barry House have no lift.
Which Paddington hotel is closest to the Heathrow Express?
Hilton London Paddington, which is built into the front of the station. Hotel Indigo on London Street is a one-minute walk, The Pilgrm is under three minutes, and the Premier Inn and hub by Premier Inn share a building on Eastbourne Terrace beside the station. The first Heathrow Express leaves Paddington at 04:34 Monday to Saturday and 05:10 on Sunday.
Does Paddington have a Night Tube?
No. The Night Tube runs on Friday and Saturday nights on the Central, Jubilee, Northern, Piccadilly, Victoria and Windrush lines, and Paddington's Bakerloo, Circle, District, Hammersmith & City and Elizabeth lines all stop overnight. The nearest Night Tube station is Lancaster Gate on the Central line, about nine minutes' walk south of Paddington station.
Which Paddington hotels suit families?
Mitre House Hotel on Sussex Gardens sells family rooms for four and interconnecting rooms for five, with a cooked breakfast included and a lift. Hilton London Metropole on Edgware Road has a Two Bedroom Family Suite for six. At the two Premier Inns, up to two children eat breakfast free when an adult orders one. Rule out The Pilgrm: every room takes two people at most and no extra beds fit.
