Bibendum Oyster Bar
£££Claude Bosi's seafood bistro on the ground floor of Michelin House, where the platters and the caviar list are the point rather than the cooking.
Korean Grill Kensington
£££Tabletop grills at every table on the corner of Courtfield Road - it sits under the Millennium Gloucester but has its own entrance and none of the hotel-restaurant feel.
Lina Stores
££The mint-green Brewer Street deli since 1944, now with restaurants attached.
Fresh pasta counter and deli; the restaurants came much later than the shop.
Macellaio RC
£££A butcher's counter that became a restaurant - Piedmontese Fassona beef hung in the window and cut to order.
Myrtos
£££Asimakis Chaniotis left Pied à Terre after 13 years to open this bright room built around an olive tree, with a fish counter. Lunch is two courses for £25.
Oddono's
£The South Kensington original is still the one locals use, and the pistachio is the benchmark everyone else is measured against.
The Ampersand Hotel
£££A themed tea built around the museums on its doorstep - planets, fossils and periodic-table biscuits, which makes it the one that works with children.
Tokyo Sukiyaki-Tei
£££A wagyu specialist doing sukiyaki and shabu-shabu - hotpot cooked at the table, which almost nowhere else in London offers properly.
