Baba Tang
££Topped Time Out's dim sum ranking, with everything made in house - the cheung fun with peanut and XO sauce is the dish people go for.
Chilli Cool
££Two shopfronts on the same street: stir-fries on one side, a separate hot pot room on the other, plus boboji - meat and vegetables on skewers, cooked in mala oil and priced by the stick.
Named by five domains, the most of any independent in the topic, and by every Chinese-language source in the corpus.
Coal Office
££££Assaf Granit's kitchen in a converted coal office at Coal Drops Yard, built around an open grill and a room designed by Tom Dixon.
Dim Sum & Duck
££Dim sum served day and night rather than only until mid-afternoon, which almost nowhere else in London does.
Dishoom
££The Irani cafes of old Bombay recreated in careful detail, and the bacon naan roll that made it a breakfast destination as much as a dinner one.
Any party size can book before 6pm; after 6pm bookings are for groups of six or more only. Most tables are held back for walk-ins either way. Seven London branches; the Branches tab has six named.
Goods Way
££A New Orleans-themed food and live-music hall a few minutes from the station - one of the few King's Cross food halls built around music as much as food.
Hawksmoor
££££British beef dry-aged and grilled over charcoal, in rooms that were mostly something else first - a brewery, a bank, a ballroom.
Itadaki Zen
££A thirty-seat organic vegan Japanese room, shojin-influenced rather than a Western vegan menu with Japanese dishes bolted on.
Laoma
££A student canteen in the best sense: all-you-can-eat hot pot, free soft drinks and no service charge, in a room that fills with people from the surrounding streets.
Lina Stores
££The mint-green Brewer Street deli since 1944, now with restaurants attached.
Fresh pasta counter and deli; the restaurants came much later than the shop.
Paolina Thai Cuisine
£Dishes from £5.95, bring your own bottle, and no regional pretensions - central Thai canteen classics done cheaply and properly.
Porte Noire
£££Idris Elba's wine bar with co-founder David Farber, at the foot of the Gasholders building by the canal - around 800 wine bins and one of the larger fine wine rooms in London.
Bar, shop and tasting room in one, so you can drink in or take a bottle away. Charcuterie and small sharing plates rather than a full menu.
Supawan
££Understated, consistently good and near King's Cross - the Thai restaurant people return to rather than tick off.
Supermax
££A late-night cocktail and disco bar reached through Happy Face pizzeria, with £9 cocktails at aperitivo hour until 7pm.
