64 Goodge Street
£££A Fitzrovia brasserie from the Woodhead group doing the format straight - steak frites, a long bar, and late service.
Akoko
££££A Michelin-starred tasting menu drawing on the cooking of Nigeria, Ghana and Senegal, with a grill and a clay oven at the centre of it.
Al Dente
£Handmade pasta made in front of you for under £15, which is why the Goodge Street room fills with students at lunch and solo diners at night.
Arcade Food Hall
££Less a food court than a set of proper kitchens under one roof - residents have included Plaza Khao Gaeng and Supa Ya Ramen rather than generic concessions.
Berners Tavern
££££A vast Edwardian ballroom with every inch of wall covered in framed pictures - probably the most photographed dining room in London.
Chishuru
££££Adejoké Bakare became the first Black female chef in Britain to hold a Michelin star, cooking the food of west Africa on a fixed menu.
Circolo Popolare
££Big Mamma group's Fitzrovia room, wall-to-wall bottles and a ceiling of greenery. Booked out well ahead.
Cometa
£££Mexican seafood specifically - tostadas, ceviche and aguachile rather than the meat-led menu everywhere else runs.
Da Long Yi
£££Its signature broth is beef tallow, dried chillies, Sichuan peppercorns and more than twenty aromatics, and the Volcano Beef is marbled beef built into a cone over crushed ice with chilli oil poured down the middle.
Ordering is by tablet. Sauce station with printed recipe cards. Part of a group with more than 300 restaurants worldwide.
Ember Yard
£££Charcoal and smoke run through the whole menu, from the meat to the ice cream.
Hakkasan
££££The basement room on Hanway Place that made high-end Chinese food fashionable in London, and set the template every glossy Chinese dining room since has borrowed from.
ICCO
£A twelve-inch pizza from £3.95, made to order and eaten in, two minutes from Goodge Street - which is roughly a third of what anywhere else in central London charges.
Trading since 1999 and calls itself 'the People's Pizzeria'. The £3.95 is the marinara, which has no cheese; toppings push it up but it stays cheap. Counter-style and busy in the evenings - this is a quick meal, not a night out.
Kaffeine
£Australian-run and one of the shops that brought antipodean coffee culture to London - the food counter is as good as the espresso.
Khao So-i
£££Named for the northern Thai coconut curry noodle it is built around - the newest room on these lists and already on all of them.
Kitchen Table
££££Two Michelin stars cooked at a horseshoe counter with no menu given out in advance - you are told each course as it is put in front of you.
Lima
£££Order the stone bass ceviche — the fish cured in leche de tigre, the cloudy lime-and-chilli marinade that has no milk in it despite the name — and the Ikejime trout sashimi with strawberry ponzu.
Lokal
£££Modern Turkish cooking from the Fred Bakery and Faros team, with counter dining and a cocktail bar alongside 110 covers.
Lore of the Land
£££Guy Ritchie's Fitzrovia pub, pouring beer from his own Gritchie Brewing Company - barley grown on his Wiltshire estate - with a more serious dining room upstairs than the bar downstairs suggests.
Two floors: a proper pub at street level, a restaurant above. The beer is the real tie-in rather than the decor.
Market Halls Oxford Street
££The largest of the four, in a former shopping centre off Oxford Street, with a games hall upstairs - the most useful non-chain lunch on the worst street in London to find one.
Mealtime Malatang
£Sliced lamb and beef, Chinese spam, tofu skin, potato, oyster mushrooms, kelp and greens, on a mala base that a Gansu food writer says is the only base worth having.
Meraki
£££A large Fitzrovia room from the Roka and Zuma group, doing Greek at that group's usual volume.
Mestizo
£££A long-running mezcaleria and dining room - the tequila and mezcal list is the reason to sit at the bar rather than a table.
Motorino
£££Luke Ahearne and Stevie Parle call it London-Italian rather than Italian - the distinction is the point, and the cooking earns it.
Ning's Fresh Beef Hotpot
££Grass-fed beef in a delicate soup base - the Cantonese-Teochew reading of hot pot, where the point is the meat and the broth is a poaching liquid rather than a sauce.
Norma
£££Sicilian cooking with the Moorish influence kept in, across four floors of a Fitzrovia townhouse.
Pahli Hill Bandra Bhai
£££Named for the Bandra hill district of Bombay, with a basement bar that runs later than the dining room above it.
PaStation
£Fresh pasta under a tenner in generous portions, near Tottenham Court Road. Built a following online rather than through the guides.
Roka
££££The robata grill sits in the middle of the room and everything comes off it - open since 2003 and still the reference point for the format in London.
Rovi
£££The Ottolenghi group's fermentation-and-fire room, where vegetables go on the grill and get the treatment meat usually gets.
Salt Yard
£££One of the rooms that started London's small-plates habit, still doing courgette flowers stuffed with goat's cheese and honey.
Shree Krishna Vada Pav
£Vada pav - the Mumbai potato-fritter roll - done properly and cheaply, from a counter rather than a dining room.
Sushi Atelier
£££Repeatedly named the best-value serious omakase in central London - the same counter discipline as the Mayfair rooms at a fraction of the outlay.
Tattu
£££A Joyce Wang Studio room built as a Chinese courtyard, around a full-size cherry blossom tree.
The only venue here named by two editorial sources and no blog, which is unusual in this corpus.
Teo Hot Pot
£££Built entirely on beef: hand-cut cuts cooked seconds at a time in a light broth, the Chaoshan way, where a mala pot would drown what you are paying for.
The Attendant
£Built inside a restored Victorian public lavatory, with the original porcelain urinals turned into the counter you sit at.
The George
££A boozy downstairs and a dining room above it, both serving the roast. Not The George Inn in Borough, which is a different pub and a different meal.
The Life Goddess
££Part deli, part taverna - you can buy the cheese you just ate, which is most of the appeal.
