Luton’s railway station is not inside the terminal. Every rail passenger must first use the automated Luton DART between the airport and Luton Airport Parkway, then choose a fast East Midlands Railway train to St Pancras or a Thameslink train serving several stations across central London.
The short version: use Luton Airport Express when St Pancras is convenient and speed matters; use Thameslink for Farringdon, Blackfriars, London Bridge and destinations farther south; and consider a direct coach for Victoria, Paddington, Baker Street or overnight travel. When buying rail tickets, select Luton Airport (LUA) rather than Luton Airport Parkway so the DART is included.

Luton Airport Express
“Luton Airport Express” is the airport name for the fast East Midlands Railway service between St Pancras International and Luton Airport Parkway. The fastest trains make the rail section in around 22 minutes and normally run twice an hour.
You still need the Luton DART at the airport end, so the fastest advertised terminal-to-St-Pancras journey is about 32 minutes. Include time for walking, waiting and ticket gates.
The service is best when St Pancras is your destination. Refurbished Class 360 trains are entering service during summer 2026 with improved seating, luggage provision, power and passenger information.
Thameslink
Thameslink is more frequent and often more useful. It serves St Pancras and continues through Farringdon, City Thameslink, Blackfriars and London Bridge, with some trains continuing to East Croydon, Gatwick and Brighton.
Use Thameslink instead of the faster Express when it avoids an Underground change. A five-minute saving to St Pancras is poor value if you then carry luggage onto the Tube for a destination already served directly by Thameslink.
The Luton DART
The DART is a fully automated, step-free people mover between the terminal and Luton Airport Parkway. It operates 24 hours a day, seven days a week and takes under four minutes.
Normal frequencies are approximately:
- every four minutes at peak times;
- every eight minutes off-peak;
- every 15 minutes during the quietest overnight period.
A standalone ticket is currently £4.90 adult or £2.45 for children aged 5–15; under-fives travel free. The best way to avoid accidentally paying twice is to buy a through ticket to or from Luton Airport (LUA). A ticket showing only Luton Airport Parkway (LTN) does not automatically include the DART.
Tickets, contactless and Oyster
Contactless is available for eligible journeys, including the DART connection. Always use the same card or device throughout and touch at every required reader.
Luton is outside the Oyster area, so do not rely on an Oyster card. A separate rail ticket may be better when using a Railcard, child fare, GroupSave or advance offer.
Compare:
- a through ticket to Luton Airport including DART;
- an advance EMR or Thameslink ticket plus DART where required;
- adult contactless pay as you go;
- a coach ticket.
Coaches to London
National Express and Green Line run throughout the day and night. Depending on the route, stops include Golders Green, Finchley Road, St John’s Wood, Baker Street, Paddington, Marble Arch and Victoria.
The fastest advertised journeys can be around 50 minutes, while normal central-London journeys are often 60–90 minutes and can be longer in traffic. Coaches stop at the airport bus station immediately outside the terminal, avoiding the DART.
Taxis and private hire
For central London, rail is normally faster and cheaper. A licensed taxi or pre-booked vehicle can suit a group, substantial luggage, limited mobility or an address far from the rail corridors.
Confirm the full quote, meeting point, waiting fees, luggage and child-seat arrangements. Do not accept an unsolicited ride.
Understanding Luton Airport
Luton has one passenger terminal. The bus station and taxi areas are beside it; the railway is reached by DART.
Do not confuse:
- Luton Airport, the terminal and the through-ticket destination code LUA;
- Luton Airport Parkway, the National Rail station code LTN;
- Luton, the town-centre railway station, which is not the airport station.
Travelling to Luton for departure
Check the airline deadline, live flight status, National Rail disruption and DART status. Allow for the DART even when a journey planner shows a tight connection.
Trains operate through much of the night, but frequency and stopping patterns vary. Engineering work is particularly important because the replacement route from Parkway or London may take longer.

Luggage and accessibility
The DART and its stations are step-free. Request airline assistance and Passenger Assist separately, check lifts at the London destination and avoid a tight connection when carrying several cases.
Common mistakes
- Buying a ticket to Luton town rather than the airport.
- Selecting Luton Airport Parkway and assuming the DART is included.
- Taking the Express to St Pancras when Thameslink directly serves the hotel area.
- Trying to use Oyster outside its valid area.
- Forgetting to allow for the DART on the way to a flight.
- Using different contactless cards or devices during one journey.
