Notting Hill offers colourful streets, Portobello Road and neighbourhood restaurants; Paddington offers some of London’s best airport and rail connections. Bayswater and Lancaster Gate sit usefully between them.

Best for: west-London atmosphere, Heathrow connections, markets and repeat visitors. Think twice if: every evening is in the West End or you expect all Paddington streets to feel picturesque.

Best things to do

  • Visit Portobello Road when the sections that interest you are operating.
  • Walk through Notting Hill to Kensington Gardens.
  • Explore Little Venice and the canals near Paddington.
  • Continue to Holland Park or the Design Museum.

Hotels

Tier Hotel Why consider it
Premium The Laslett Stylish neighbourhood base near Notting Hill Gate
Mid-range The Pilgrm Characterful rooms immediately beside Paddington
Value-focused Premier Inn London Paddington Basin Practical base with strong transport

Paddington has many small converted-townhouse hotels. Check lift access, air conditioning, room size and recent refurbishment reviews.

Restaurants

Restaurant Style Why go
The Ledbury Fine dining Major special-occasion destination in Notting Hill
The Pelican British pub cooking Strong neighbourhood atmosphere
Pearl Liang Chinese Reliable option near Paddington Basin

Gold and Caractère offer further Notting Hill choices. Market-food quality varies, so choose the stall rather than assuming every Portobello vendor is exceptional.

Transport and airport fit

Paddington has the Elizabeth line, Heathrow Express, National Rail and four Tube lines across connected stations. Notting Hill Gate has Central, District and Circle lines.

For Heathrow, compare Elizabeth line and Heathrow Express using the complete door-to-door journey. For Gatwick, a Thameslink or Victoria-area hotel may be simpler.
